Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name (Psalm 86:11 NIV).
The book of Proverbs chapter 9:10 tells us that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One brings understanding. In order for us to rely upon God and trust that He will be faithful, we need to know who He is and what His promises are. For us to know and understand who God is, His majesty, His power, His love, His righteous judgment, to have a healthy fear of Him, that is, to reverence Him and bow down before Him, giving Him all the glory and honor due to His name and to worship Him with a single-minded devotion, we need to study the scriptures. It is through reading, studying, meditating, digesting the scriptures, listening attentively as scriptures are explained, and through prayer that we will come to truly know and appreciate God.
The ways of the Lord are high and holy. His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than our thoughts. The prophet Isaiah saw the Lord high and exalted and seated on a throne, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphim, “and they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3 NIV).
Our God is sovereign, mighty and powerful, yet gentle, loving, kind, patient and fair. “See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young” (Isaiah 40:10-11 NIV).
God is all wise. “Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counselor? Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?” (Isaiah 40:13-14 NIV).
God is omniscient and omnipresent as is reflected in Psalm 139. He knows everything about you, everything you do and everything that you have ever done. He knows your thoughts, and even every single hair on your head. The psalmist David said such knowledge is too wonderful for him and too lofty for him to attain. There is no place you can go to hide from God because He is everywhere at the same time and the darkness is like daylight to Him.
Jesus is majestic! “I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance” (Revelation 1:12-16 NIV).
At the sight of Him, the elders in heaven bow down in worship. “Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb…” (Revelation 5:8 NKJV)
Our God is love. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 NKJV).
God’s words are true and faithful. “Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful” (Revelation 21:5 NKJV).
Jesus is the creator of the heavens and the earth. He never gets tired, faint or weary and He doesn’t sleep. His understanding is beyond human comprehension. He gives power to the weak and strength to those who have no might. “…Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31 NKJV).
I pray that you will seek to know God today, His will for your life and that you will show your reverence and your love for God by being obedient to His words. I pray that God will grant you a single-minded devotion to Him alone so that you may give Him the honor due to His name.
